His description was of a continent known as Atlantis, that  had sunk beneath the sea some 9000 years before his birth.  He told of a very unusual land formation  that was made up of a large ring of land on the outside, with ocean inside it, and, another inner ring inside the first, with ocean inside that ring also.  And, inside the inner ring, was a large island in the center.  He told of the outer ring being reserved for great farmlands and also the houses of the working class.  On the inner ring, were great gardens and structures.  This is also where the upper class citizens of Atlantis had their houses and palaces.  On the island, which was inside the inner ring of Atlantis, was a great temple.  This is the place where the priests, kings, people in the kings court, and holy men of Atlantis resided.

Many people have sought to find the real Atlantis, and there are a few places that seem to be the lost continent of Atlantis.  One of them being Antarctica.  Unlike unlike the Arctic, which is made up of ice only, Antarctica is made up of solid land which is buried under a mile to three miles of ice.

In 1513, a Turkish seaman and map maker gathered together his collection of ancient maps, some of them dating back to the period of ancient Egypt.  These ancient maps have disappeared since, but we do have the map that was made from them,  by the seaman, in 1513.  On this map is a continent named Atlantis, which didn't look much like Antarctica until satellite images that can see through the ice, showed the old map to be an almost exact mapping of Antarctica.  It is truly amazing that people knew just what Antarctica looked like hundreds, even thousands of years before the first Antarctic explorer set foot on the icy land mass.

Some scientists think that there could be one explanation for all of this:  The continent of Antarctica was formerly positioned near the equator at one time, and a great "crust slip" took place on earth.  A crust slip is believed to occur when earth is subjected to great astronomical influences from the other planets, or perhaps, large comets or asteroids.  What happens, in theory, is that the outer skin of our planet becomes loosed from the under mantel, and all the continents start to slip.  They say that the North American continent was at the north pole and Antarctica was on or near the equator.  When the slip happened, North America moved to its current position and Antarctica moved to the south pole and then became covered with ice.
In May of the year 2000, there will occur an alignment of planets, the likes of which have not happened in thousands of years.  Some astronomers and geologists have said that this planetary alignment will exert enough force to cause another crust slip.  Perhaps those of us living in North America should invest in some fur parkas and triple glazed windows!

If there are any ancient ruins on the continent of Antarctica, we can't find them because they are buried under miles of ice.

Edgar Cayce, who was know as a healer and psychic, and also as the father of holistic medicine, claimed that he was, in a former life, a citizen of Atlantis.  Cayce told of an advanced civilization, with all the inventions of our modern day life including  weapons of mass destruction.  The most notable weapon being the "death ray".  Death rays came in all sizes, but a giant death ray machine, which was the largest of all their weapons is said to be the weapon that destroyed Atlantis.  Cayce also predicted that the western ridge of Atlantis would be discovered off the coast of the Bimini islands.  In The 1960's a startling discovery was made in that same place.  It was that of an ancient roadway built out of large stones which was under the ocean off the coast of Bimini.  Could this be an ancient highway of Atlantis?

Another place which could be Atlantis is the area around and including the Canary Islands.  This is the only place where ancient ruins, sufficient to the description of the civilization of Atlantis are  to be found.  Ruins of an advanced Minoan civilization are to be found here.  Remains of apartment complexes with plumbing carrying hot and cold running water and also strange globules, which, after being examined for some time, were showed to be electric batteries capable of generating a few volts of electricity.

But the place that is closest in description to the Atlantis of Plato is the Greek island of Thera.
