Quetzalcoatl was both a god and a king of the ancient Mexican Toltec civilization. There is some question as to weather he ruled first as a king and was turned into a god by the people. (much like the Egyptians did) or weather he was a king that took on the god role.
So what you may ask is so "strange" about this man? Well for one, "Quetzalcoatl" is a rather strange name. Another strange thing about Quetzalcoatl is that he was a serpent worshipper. The symbol of Quetzalcoatl is a serpent with wings. He was a good god who fought all the evil gods but he did happen to demand ritual sacrifice in the form of dead snakes and butterflies raised up to heaven to him.
was also the god of venus and god of the wind. There
are so many old legends regarding Quetzalcoatl's origins
that the true fact remains: we will never really know what
the true or original story actually was. We do know
that Quetzalcoatl was the name of a real Toltec king and we
also know Quetzalcoatl was the name of their favorite
god. We know that the Aztecs later adopted
Quetzalcoatl, although they changed his position and planet
He was still none the less revered throughout ancient Mexico for many centuries.
There is a giant pyramid in honor of Quetzalcoatl in Cholula, Mexico. So we can see that this god king left quite a large, if not strange imprint on the face of history.
