Paganism is not a religion but rather, a classification or group of religions. These religions under the Paganism classification include: Asatru, Druidism, Chaos Magic, Witchcraft, Goddess Worship and other Nature Worshippers.
The
word "pagan" means: A person who is not a Christian,
Moslem, or Jew ; a person who is without
religion. While this is indeed the correct definition
for the word "pagan", many pagans would quickly disagree
with that, saying that they are very religious
people. In witchcraft for example, the witches
involved almost always believe in a goddess and some believe
in a marriage of deities; a father god and mother
goddess. Also many witches believe that all power
emanates from the earth or elements: air, fire, and
water. This belief is followed by many intense rituals
for the purpose of cleansing, blessing and empowerment.
Pagans have a hard time here in North America. Their belief's are usually misunderstood by many and as a result are forced to practice their rituals in secret for fear of their lives and general safety.
Paganism dates back thousands of years. Jews had mixed their belief structure with outside tribes such as the Hittites, Amalacites, ect. since time immemorial and were of course warned against doing this. What we have here in North America, is what is known as Neo Paganism. This takes on the form of many mixtures of very old and very new belief's and rituals. In Europe you will find a more "true" Paganism because these people have stuck to the old ways.
