I am a 24 year old man now in the Navy. I grew up in a
small town in East Texas called Marshall. Just like the
teenagers in Maryland, we also had a folk legend about a
creature that was half man half goat. The first story I
ever heard was from my father. In 1972, he and some
friends had went out
hunting in some woods located in a rural part of the
county. The land they were hunting on was a swampy area
of what we like to call "bottom land." The excursion had taken
place in the late afternoon around 3:30pm or so. As the
afternoon had turned into evening, the rest of the hunting
party had returned to the spot where they had parked the
truck. All of his his friends had returned except
one. The other three of them waited until just after the
sun set. They finally decided to load into the truck and
drive down to where he was hunting. En route, they heard
three shots fired. When finally reaching the end of the
dirt road, they saw their friend standing in the middle of the
road with a blank stare on his face and he was as white as a
sheet. They stopped the truck and he entered and began
telling them what he had seen. He said that he was
heading back to the truck and kept hearing something rustling
through the leaves maybe ten yards behind him.
He turned around a couple of times and it stopped. This
continued and finally he turned around and shined his
spotlight toward where the rustling was taking place. At
that moment, something leaped out of the bushes and just stood
there staring him down. He described the creature as
having the upper torso of a man and the lower legs of a
goat. He then raised his rifle and fired three shots at
it at very close range. The creature didn't even
flinch. It finally ran into the woods when hearing the
truck coming up the road. The one thing he said he would
never forget was the creatures bright red eyes.
Of course growing up in my hometown, high school students
would return to the area off Blackjack road looking for a
glimpse of the creature. I myself have never seen
anything but have heard other stories about the creature that
haunts the river bottoms outside of Marshall. I just
thought this
story might help in someway to show how each town has there
own version of this urban myth.
