I lived in Bowie, Maryland from 1965 until 1976, and I'm glad to hear the legend of
Goatman lives on. The article in the Washington Post awhile back brought back many
memories. I've never actually seen Goatman myself. The residents of Zug Road, as the
Post correctly reported, certainly know much more about him than I do. But I know for a
fact that that his legend goes back at least as far as about 1970. Here's how I know.
Fletchertown Road was notorious (at least it used to be before the developers
discovered the area and widened and straightened it). It was 2.0 miles (yes, exactly) of
tight turns and blind corners. The area through which it ran was nearly undeveloped -- a
couple of horse farms, and the occasional redneck house with half a dozen rusting
American sedans sitting on blocks in the front yard (yes, the front yard). The pavement
was narrow -- sixteen feet wide -- and there were no shoulders -- just sturdy trees
growing inches from the pavement. Fletchertown Road started nowhere and ended
nowhere, so it carried little traffic. You could get in your car (or on your motorcycle) and
go as fast as you dared without worrying too much about what you might meet around
the next corner. And the next corner was always right up ahead! Between 1970 and
1976, I made many trips up and down the length of Fletchertown Road while
commuting from Bowie to the University of Maryland. Fletchertown Road was by no
means the shortest route to College Park -- but it was without question the most
interesting. My companion for those trips, by the way, was first a 350-cc Bridgestone
motorcycle; later a Honda CB750 (enormous torque; the first of the Japanese
superbikes); and still later a Lotus Europa S2 -- a car designed for the spirit of
Fletchertown Road if ever there was one!  But back to the point. Etched forever in
my memory is one particular part of the Flethertown Road experience. It came at the
end of a straight section of oh, say, 200 yards: a hard, blind, off-camber,
decreasing-radius 90-degree left-hand turn. Right at the edge of the pavement, waiting
in patient silence to collect anyone unlucky enough to misjudge his braking point, was a
sturdy wooden fence with THE WORDS in cold black spray paint: 'GOATMAN LIVES!'

I got a goatman story for you..   In 1987 we all moved to Prince Georges
County..  I lived in UPPER MARLBORO, Clinton was not far away, and neither
was Andrews AFB.  I forget where I used to live exactly, was it called the
PRESIDENTIAL ESTATES, i'm not so sure, anymore.   Anyhow we had these back
areas we'd ride our bicycles.  Now, there was a place that we called HELL
HILL.  Up on top of HELL HILL was this weird setup of dirt and mounds and it
was great fun to ride and jump on them..  Anyhow that's not why it was called
HELL HILL.   But one day coming from the back way into hell hill, as to avoid
having to ride up hell hill, it was a big hill (I was only 10 at the time)..
Anyhow on the far side in the dunelike parts where some water had piled up, I
spied a goat like creature, from a distance. (I wore glasses at the time..,
and I had them on.)  It wasn't totally a goat.  It kinda looked humanoid..
Anyhow down by that area where I saw it, I always smelled the flesh of dead
animals.  You know what something dead smells like in 100 degree heat.  It
was hot, back then.  It was summer of..   It never occured to me until after
I had seen it, that maybe it was killing those little animals. I never saw it
again, though...  I wouldn't go near that part of the dirt track thingy, by
myself..  I always got goosebumps after that.  I didn't go to the TOP OF HELL
HILL anymore near dark.  (this was during daylight, that this happened,
though).  So I took off, because after it saw me, it disappeared..  lol..
weird eh..  it just vanished, and I was like..  HOLY *&^%!  So I started
pedalling as fast as my overweight (back then) ass could go, and darted for
HELL HILL, as to gain the most speed, and escape..  I had the feeling as I
hurled down the HILL, that something was watching me, the whole time..  I
didn't look back.  As I said, I was cautious as to going up there after that
point..
 That is my story.

Hi my name is Jimmy, And one night my friends Cory and Channing and I were at my house located 5 miles south of the Cry Baby Bridge. We are 22, 21, and 20. One night we went to a party and we decided to tell some urban legends. Well being where we were the subject of goatman came up. So after we told our stories we got in groups and headed out to Cry Baby Bridge, to find out if goatman was really who we said he was. Well about 8:00 p.m. we arrived at the bridge. So we decided to take a walk along the road with the weapons of a pathetic branch, a deer knife, and a hand full of pebbles. Well along the way we saw a carcass. It appeared to be a mangled dog, and you'll never believe this but it had no head. About 10 min. later we heard something. It sounded like something knocking on a tree. Then 30 seconds later we heard a grunting noise. 10 seconds later we saw a figure silhouetted against the light of a 1/2 moon. It was moving. Yes, moving towards us. It had an ax in one hand and a dog's head in the other. This figure as it got closer it appeared to look like a half man half goat, and man were we scared. So, we weren't going to stick around to see what it was for sure. So we threw our pebbles, branch, and knife. But we don't know if he was harmed. All I know is that I will never go back to that place again..CRY BABY BRIDGE.

I live near Denton TX and there is a tale of a goatman. Many members of my family have seen him. I didn't believe them at first. But after a lot of intense interviews with some old folks. Things started to come together. Before being a film director it didn't take long to manifest a movie script. So me and my crew got out on site. We shot it and it looks great. Its the scariest movie I've ever made. It definitely scared some people.

UPDATE: This site was torn down after March 2001 but it remains in the eternal archive!

Update on the Scraphorn Monster:  I could only find one mention of this monster here in modernity.  Apparently, this was a Texas monster.
